10 Interesting Facts About Barry Tuckwell

A Family Tradition. Barry Tuckwell was born into the musical family. His father was an organist, his mother played the piano, and his older sister played the violin.
Long Musical Career. Barry Tuckwell played French horn as an orchestral player and soloist for over five decades.
Inspired by True Masters. Barry was inspired by many well-known musicians, such as Dennis Brain, Tommy Dorsey, the Chicago orchestra with Farkas, the Cleveland Orchestra, and more.
Thirteen Years with the London Symphony Orchestra. He joined this orchestra in 1955 and stayed with them until 1968, first as their principal horn player, and later as a director and chairman.
Chosen by the Instrument. Barry learned how to play the organ, piano and discovered the horn at the age of 13, following a recommendation from a family friend. Later, in his interviews, he said that the French horn had chosen him, not vice versa.
Creator of His Own Horn. In collaboration with the world-famous company Holton, the musician worked on designing his ideal horn that resulted in Holton H104 Tuckwell trumpet, which features a rose brass bell and a nickel silver body.
World Traveler. Tuckwell’s career included many concerts around the globe. He performed together with leading orchestras, his own trio, and quartet across Europe, the USA, Australia, and Asia.
Inspiration for Composers. Barry Tuckwell inspired many composers, including Gunther Schuller, Richard Rodney Bennett, Thea Musgrave, Oliver Knussen, Don Banks, and more.
Devoted Educator. Tuckwell shared his passion for music through master classes at leading educational institutions of England, the USA and Australia. He was also the author of manuals and books on the introductory exercises for French horn players.
Extensive Recording Output. Tuckwell’s remarkable career includes over 50 solo discs.
