  1. The One Who Brought Innovations. At the start of his career, John Coltrane was known for his works in the bebop and hard bop styles. He was among the first musicians, who played free jazz, and he also contributed to the use of modes.
  2. Workaholic. John Coltrane featured on many albums by other artists. He collaborated with a well-known trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk.
  3. Saxophone Wasn’t His First Instrument. John played clarinet and alto horn during his high school, and later he switched to the saxophone. Lester Young and Johnny Hodges were the musicians from whom he drew his inspiration.
  4. Overcoming Addictions. Coltrane struggled with heroin and alcohol addiction from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. In 1957, Coltrane had a sort of a spiritual awakening, which helped him overcome his issues. This transformation made his life fuller and richer, as well as pushed his productivity.
  5. Spiritual Vibes. The fact that Coltrane was raised in a religious family had a great influence on his music. His saxophone conveys the meditative and gospel-like qualities in many of his works.   8. His Own Quartet. Coltrane founded his group in 1960 and recorded their first album “My Favorite Things” in 1961, which featured Coltrane playing a soprano saxophone.
  9. Playing With His Wife. His second wife, Alice, who was also a jazz musician, played the piano in his band in the 1960s.
  10. Short But Remarkable Career. Coltrane's life was cut short when he was only 40. Despite his relatively short life and musical journey, he had a great impact on jazz music in general.
