10 Interesting Facts about Marcel Moyse: Biography and Career.
- Moved to Paris at the Age of 15. In Paris, where he moved to live with his uncle Joseph, a cellist, Marcel got a glimpse of what the life of an average professional musicians looked like. His uncle also intended to find him a flute teacher.
- First Success. Marcel learned to play the flute from Adolphe Hennebains, a French flutist and teacher, through whom he was invited to Paul Taffanel’s class at Paris Conservatoire. When he was fourteen, he already played in an orchestra conducted by Rimsky-Korsakov.
- One of the Best Students. He was so skillful that he soon earned a reputation as one of the best flutists at the Paris Conservatoire. That was also proved with the first prize, which he won at the age of seventeen.
- Interested in the Concept of Rich Sound. To make his sound as rich as his uncle’s sound, Marcel also included the repertoire for solo violin and cello literature into his practice.
- Touring the USA. In 1913, Marcel toured with Australian opera singer Nellie Melba.
- Collaborating with the Leading Conductors. Throughout his career, Marcel played as a soloist under the best leading conductors of his time, including Adolph Busch, Furtwängler, Toscanini, Prokofiev, Richard Strauss, and others.
- Founder of Marlboro School of Music. In 1951, he became one of the founders of Marlboro School of Music, also known as Marlboro Music festival allowing musicians to live, train and enjoy quality music together.
- The Influential Teacher. Marcel’s teaching career included 22 years at the Paris Conservatory. In addition, he also shared his knowledge in Brattleboro. His methods and playing influenced many flutists and woodwind musicians in Europe, America and Japan, where it contributed to the Suzuki Flute Method. Marcel was also the author of 37 books devoted to the flute and a recording titled “The French School of Flute Playing.”
- Unique Playing Style. Listeners and students called Marcel’s playing poetic and full of imagination. His playing style conveyed the sense of love toward music.
- French Impressionist in Sound. Marcel asked his students to “sing” on their instruments and taught them that everything starts with the music and the love it represents, not the technique which is only a means.
