Article: 10 Facts About Emmanuel Pahud

Portrait of Emmanuel Pahud – celebrated French flutist known for his expressive playing and international career

10 Facts About Emmanuel Pahud

  1. The Absence of Musical Background. Unlike the parents of many well-known musicians, Emmanuel’s parents weren’t involved in music.
  2. Travelling as a Big Part of Life. Emmanuel Pahud’s family moved from one place to another repeatedly, which shaped his international outlook from an early age.
  3. Neighbours' Contribution to His Passion.  During his family’s life in Rome, when he was only four years old, he heard how their neighbours’ children were playing musical instruments. He was especially impressed with the sounds of the flute played by the oldest son.
  4. First Flute. Emmanuel received his first flute as a Christmas present from his parents. It was a silver-plated Yamaha. Nowadays, Emmanuel plays a 14-karat golden flute, which he bought from Brannen Brothers in Boston.
  5. Mozart Concerto K.313 in G Major As a Symbol. It was this famous piece which inspired Pahud to learn to play the flute. Moreover, it was a piece which he performed during his debut with the National Orchestra of Belgium in 1985.
  6. Performances with the Most Prestigious Orchestras. Pahud took the position of principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, when he was 22 years old. Later he also shared the stage with other international orchestras, such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and others.
  7. Beyond Limits. Pahud was classically trained, he actively participated in the orchestral and chamber music and also played jazz with his friends and colleagues from the Berlin Philharmonic.
  8. Performer Not the Creator. Emmanuel thinks about himself more as a performer who adapts to various composers’ ideas like a chameleon.
  9. Great Legacy. Pahud’s legacy includes more than 20 recordings, featuring his performances on the flute in symphonic, chamber, and string settings.
  10. Teaching Activity. During his active touring, the musician often holds masterclasses, but mostly he works with online lessons.
