Early Life and Cuban Roots

Arturo Sandoval was born on November 6, 1949, in Artemisa, a small town in Cuba, on the outskirts of Havana. He was exposed to the rhythms and traditions of Cuban music, as well as inspired by the music of Dizzy Gillespie. A perfect blend of Latin influences with American jazz present in Gillespie’s music shaped his early artistic vision.

At the age of 13, he joined a village band, where he learned the basics of music theory and percussion. After trying several musical instruments, he chose the trumpet as his primary instrument and started studying at the Cuban National School of Arts. There, he studied for three years, and after that he earned a place in the country's all-star national band. The musician also became one of the founding members of Irakere, a Cuban band known for their infusion of jazz, Afro-Cuban folkloric, Cuban dance, funk, and even classical music.

Friendship with Dizzy Gillespie

Legendary trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was more than an inspirational personality for Arturo. The friendship was a truly significant step in Sandoval’s life since they met in 1977 during Gillespie’s visit to Havana. Sandoval showed the city to Dizzy — they just traveled around the streets and listened to rumba music. Gillespie had no idea that Arturo knew Dizzy’s lines and was also a trumpet player. However, once he knew it, he immediately recognized Arturo’s talent and took him under his wing. After that time Dizzy became Sandoval's  mentor and friend. Their friendship lasted till Dizzy’s death in 1993.

Under Gillespie’s influence, Sandoval embraced bebop and refined his style. Together they performed for an audience, talked about music, played the piano and tried different things. In one of his interviews, Arturo said that it was a true gift to become a friend with his hero and be able to spend time together so great.

Dizzy Gillespie not only offered artistic support and guidance to Arturo but also helped bring international attention to the young Cuban trumpeter. He invited Sandoval to join the United Nations Orchestra in 1989. Together they traveled around places and promoted musical and cultural diversity. During one of their tours in 1990, Dizzy helped Sandoval and family defect to the U.S

New Life in America

Defection from Cuba was a life-changing decision for Sandoval. It wasn’t easy to leave behind his homeland, but artistic freedom weighed a lot for him. The musician saw it as the chance to provide a better life for his family, and it outweighed all the risks.
He became a U.S. naturalized citizen in 1998. His story of defection and new life was later dramatized in the 2000 HBO film For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, which brought Sandoval’s story to a wider audience.

Trumpet and Flugelhorn

Although Arturo started his musical journey from classical trumpet lessons, he also perfectly mastered the flugelhorn. His playing is described by listeners as full of nice dusky and fluffy sounds. By the way, one of the world's leading makers of woodwind and brass instruments,  Leblanc, designed the Leblanc F357 flugelhorn especially for Arturo Sandoval with an accent on flexibility, note-bending, and extreme dynamics. The Arturo Sandoval model differs from other flugelhorns thanks to its solid copper branch and bell.
