Born in Malmö, Håkan Hardenberger started playing the trumpet when he was eight. He learned everything about this instrument from Bo Nilsson, a teacher from his hometown. He refined his skills and enriched knowledge at the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied for three years with Pierre Thibaud, who was rather a strict and demanding teacher. Also, he studied with an American trumpeter and composer, Thomas Stevens in Los Angeles.
Hardenberger’s career started developing rapidly after he had won the Toulon competition and had become a joint first prizewinner in the Geneva Competition. As Håkan admitted in his interview, he found competitions a terrible experience, however it gave him a feeling that there was something in his performance that captured people’s attention.
From 2016 to 2018, Hardenberger worked as the Artistic Director of the Malmö Chamber Music Festival. Nowadays, the musician is a professor at the Malmö Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music.
Håkan Hardenberger has a few significant awards: the Swedish royal medal Litteris et Artibus for his important contributions to music, which he received in 2003, and the Kungliga Musikaliska akademiens Interpretpris, received in 2020.
